The game description says: "Pick ZERO ASSIST to solve a real scrambled cube yourself!" In this mode there are no letters to copy. You actually solve the cube.

The four gameplay modes

ModeWhat you do
Default 3x3Copy the key sequence on a 3x3 cube. This is the standard race.
Default 2x2The same on a 2x2 cube, with shorter strings (26 keys in one game we saw).
Zero Assist 3x3Solve a real scramble with no hints.
Zero Assist 2x2Solve a real 2x2 scramble with no hints.

Pick the mode in the Gameplay column of the table's Modifiers screen. Your first game is locked to the defaults. More cube types were marked "coming soon" in October footage.

Cube notation you need

Real cube solving uses standard notation. R, L, U, D, F, B turn the right, left, up, down, front and back faces clockwise. R' means counter-clockwise, and R2 means a double turn. In-game, each of these moves is mapped to one of the letter keys. Check Settings → Keyboard Keys for your mapping.

A simple plan for your first Zero Assist solve

  1. Start with 2x2 Zero Assist. It has only corners.
  2. Make one face with matching side colours (the first layer).
  3. Orient the last layer, then permute it. Two algorithms are enough to start: R U R' U R U2 R' (Sune) and a corner swap.
  4. Move up to 3x3 with the beginner layer-by-layer method: cross, corners, middle edges, last layer.

Expect much longer times at first. In footage, Zero Assist-style solves ran past 90 seconds, compared with under 10 seconds in default races.

Why it's worth it

The default strings are real algorithms. Once you know what they do, memorising them gets much easier, and your default-mode times drop too. Zero Assist has its own tab on the stats screen.
